The Office of Student Affairs at California State University, Fresno received a formal request today from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity s Phi Chi chapter for an appeal of the university s loss of recognition sanction announced Jan. 24.

The written request was submitted to Dr. Paul Oliaro, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, who serves as the appellate administrator. He will now arrange a meeting for the students to submit their case to him.

The students may only submit new information that they believe would contradict the findings reported to them in the sanction letter that followed the university s recent administrative review. They also may challenge the severity of the sanction.

At this time, there is no set timeline for the process. Because the matter is now in a formal appeal stage, no additional information or details will be available until the appeal is completed and a decision rendered.

Phi Gamma Delta was banned for at least five years from official recognition by Fresno State as a result of alcohol-related violations of university policy. Four other sanctions were also issued. (See press release for the sanction announcement).
