A Fresno State student’s plan for a startup company designed to make affordable, good-quality housing on infill property available to low- and middle-income families won a competition cosponsored by California State University, Fresno’s Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

For winning, business student Jason Murray received $6,500, an office for one year in the new Lyles Center complex at the Student Recreation Center and entry into the Draper Fisher challenge. Murray has raised $150,000 for his company that installs manufactured housing on property in Fresno County left vacant as land elsewhere opened to development.

The Lyles Center partners with the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovation Association for the annual Invention 2 Venture Business Plan Competition, a stepping stone to the $250,000 Draper Fisher Jurvetson Venture Challenge on Tuesday, May 30, in Palo Alto.

The other prize winners announced earlier this month were:

• The Healing on Touch Center, proposed by Professor Charles Arokiasamy and graduate student Scott Kupferman in the Fresno State Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, which won the $2,500 second prize. The business trains blind people in reflexology and provides them work in “hot centers.”

• Keeler Water, proposed by Rob Keeler, a master of business administration student, which won the $1,000 third-place award. His business would place customized labels on water bottles that could be sold to raise money for schools.

• Go Jet, a proposal by business undergraduates Ben Hodges (who is a pilot), Lauren Ross, Ken Michaelson and Sung Kyu Park, that placed fourth and won $100. The plan is for an on-demand air service that uses a lightweight, cheap-to-operate jet plane that can land at airports with short runways not served by regular flights.

Details about the competition are available by contacting Dr. Timothy M. Stearns, director of the Lyles Center, 559.294.2045 or timothysacsufresno.edu.
