A new, 18-month teacher support program in the Central Valley, Strategic Transformation of Educator Preparation, begins Monday (June 22) with a two-week summer academy at Fresno State. Funded by a grant from the California State University Chancellor’s Office through the Kremen School of Education and Human Development at Fresno State, the program is designed to transform the teacher recruitment, selection and preparation process so future elementary and secondary teachers are given the inspiration, support and resources necessary. For the summer academy, which runs 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Kremen Building (Room 157), 10 Fresno State faculty members will join seven K-8 teachers from the Central Valley to better prepare future teachers to develop deep content expertise, cultural and civic competence, understanding of the relationship between content and pedagogy in instruction and thorough knowledge of the Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards and English Language Development standards. The program will provide liberal studies students with improved course work, early field experiences not previously offered, a supportive cohort experience and deepened preparation for careers in teaching.
