More than 100 fourth through eighth grade students from Eureka to San Diego will vie to be crowned California ‘s National Geographic State Bee champion Friday, March 31, at Fresno State and earn a trip to the national finals.

The free, public event, which is the second level of the annual National Geographic Bee, will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the North Gym (Room 118).

The state champion will receive $100, the “National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition,” and a trip to Washington, D.C. to represent California in the National Geographic Bee Championship at National Geographic Society headquarters May 14-17. The national final round that week will be moderated by journalist and humorist Mo Rocca and will air on National Geographic at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Friday, May 19.

This is the fourth year that Fresno Sate is hosting the event on campus, coordinated by Sean Boyd, a lecturer in the Department of Geography and City and Regional Planning located in the College of Social Sciences.

“The scholarship of these young people is astounding,” Boyd said “I never cease to be amazed with their knowledge of, and passion for, all things geographic! Based on what I see each year at the State Geo Bee, the future is in good hands!”

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll.
