Fresno State’s Valley Public History Initiative project, “Straight Outta Fresno: From Popping to B-boying and B-girling,” received a $15,000 grant from California Humanities. The Department of History project seeks to radically alter the relationship between academia and the general public by creating a new model for how archives are created and how historical knowledge is disseminated, said Dr. Romeo Guzman, history professor and founder of the project established in fall 2016. Fresno State historians and students have worked with community partners to host four events related to the history of hip hop dance and culture in Fresno from the late 1970s to the early 2000s.
