Hispanic Heritage Month 17: Rebozo Fest revives Sept. 25-29

The Rebozo Revival Festival, “El Renacimiento del Rebozo,” returns to Fresno for a week-long celebration with the opening ceremony and art exhibition 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, at Fres.co (1918 Fresno Street).

The festival, which is part of Fresno State’s Hispanic Heritage Month observance, is presented by the University and Lourdes Sevilla (founder and creator of the festival) in collaboration with several community partners.

Rebozos are long, flat, handwoven garments made of silk, cotton and rayon in varying lengths, color and pattern designs. A national symbol in Mexico, rebozos are traditionally worn by indigenous women there and in other parts of Central America to carry a baby and large bundles.

Events include the rebozo-making process from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26, featuring storytelling with master weavers from San Luis Potosí, Chiapas and Oaxaca and a how-to film at the Holistic Cultural and Education Wellness Center (4867 E. Kings Canyon Road).

The Rebozo Fashion Show will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the North Gym, Room 118 on campus.

Educational workshops with the weavers will be held on campus from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, in the Henry Madden Library, Room 3212.

The closing ceremony reception will be 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, at the Mexican Consulate (7435 N. Ingram Ave.)

The Rebozo Revival Festival is cosponsored by Fresno State’s Center for Creativity and the Arts, College of Social Sciences and College of Arts and Humanities the Departments of Anthropology, Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, and the Cross Culture and Gender Center’s Latino/a Programs and Services.

Community partners are Fres.co, Dulce Upfront, Holistic Cultural and Wellness Education Center and the Mexican Consulate-Fresno.
