The Jewish Studies Lecture Series for the fall semester begins with a talk by Sven-Erik Rose, titled “In Adorno’s Blind Spot: Yiddish Poetry from the Warsaw Ghetto,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Henry Madden Library (Room 2206).
The free, public series is sponsored by the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, which enables Fresno State and continuing education students to explore the history, culture and religious practices from ancient times to the present.
A new Jewish studies minor will launch in the spring, announced Dr. Jill Fields, program coordinator. It will include new courses such as Jewish Studies 10: Jewish Civilizations, Jewish Studies 100W: Writing about the Jewish Experience and Jewish Studies 154: Jewish American Popular Culture.

- “In Adorno’s Blind Spot: Yiddish Poetry from the Warsaw Ghetto” by Sven-Erik Rose at 6 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18 in Henry Madden Library (Room 2206) — the talk will focus on little known poems written in Nazi ghettos (above all Warsaw).
- “Menashe” — film showing at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium — discussion following film with director Joshua Weinstein.
- “King Solomon’s Table — Ancient ‘Foodies’ and the Origins of Modern Jewish Cooking,” by Joan Nathan, award-winning author of 11 cookbooks and host of PBS series “Jewish Cooking in America with Joan Nathan.”
