The Smittcamp Family Honors College at California State University, Fresno has selected 50 high-achieving high school graduates who will receive full scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year.
The freshmen, who come from throughout California, were selected from more than 400 applicants, said Dr. Stephen Rodemeyer, Honors College director. They will be welcomed to the university at a dinner hosted by President and Mrs. John D. Welty on Aug. 21, 2007.
Each student receives a President’s Honors Scholarship, which covers registration fees, a $200 book allowance, full room rent for those who choose campus housing in a residence hall and a laptop computer stipend.
In addition, they receive priority registration and other campus privileges, enroll in several specially designed honors classes that have a 25-student limit and participate in a weekly colloquium with guest speakers and discussions.
The Smittcamp Family Honors College is unique in the California State University system in that scholarship students are admitted as a group, take a series of specially designed honors courses and interact in educational and social activities.
Honors College applicants must score 1,800 or above on the SAT, be in the upper 10 percent of their graduating class or have a minimum GPA of 3.6.
Smittcamp Family Honors College students are required to volunteer 30 hours of community service in their first year and 20 hours in subsequent years. To remain in the program, a student must enroll in at least 12 units and earn a 3.0 GPA as a freshman, 3.25 as a sophomore and 3.4 as a junior.
The Smittcamp Family Honors College began in 1998 with a $1 million gift from Earl and Muriel Smittcamp and family, a prominent agribusiness family and longtime supporters of Fresno State.
