Maya Cinema is hosting the second level of two National Geographic student competitions, the GeoBee California State Competition and the California GeoChallenge regional competition, on Friday, March 29, at Campus Pointe (3090 E. Campus Pointe Dr.). The event is coordinated by Sean Boyd, a lecturer in the Department of Geography and Community and Regional Planning in the College of Social Sciences.
The GeoBee consists of more than 100 students, fourth through eighth grade, who will represent California and compete in the 2019 National Geographic State Bee preliminary rounds beginning at 9 a.m., followed by final rounds at 12:15 p.m. The 2019 Geography National Champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll.
The GeoChallenge, composed of 75 students competing from California, will discuss this year’s theme “Tackling Plastic,” and will take place on campus in the University Business Center. The first-place team will receive a $1,000 cash prize and support for the team members and their coach to travel to the national competition in Washington, D.C. in May. Second- and third-place winners for both competitions will also win various prizes.
