Six Fresno churches for the first time will be visited by California State University leaders – most from Fresno State – as part of the annual CSU Super Sunday program that reaches out to African Americans throughout California.
Super Sunday, operating since 2005, puts CSU leaders in churches to talk with African American prospective students and their families about college, how to apply, what financial aid is available and how to prepare for higher education. From the original 24 church visits – mostly in Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area, the CSU program has extended to 90 churches this year.
Here’s the schedule of visits during February to Fresno churches by Fresno State officials and the university’s Outreach staff, who will be available to offer assistance and answer questions.
- 9:15 a.m. Feb. 7 – Westside Church of God (1422 W. California Ave.)
Dr. Joyce Ester, assistant vice president for judicial affairs and division planning. - 9 and 11 a.m. Feb. 21 – Family Community Church (2434 E. Nees Ave.)
Maxine McDonald, assistant vice president for Student Success Services. - 11 a.m. Feb. 21 – Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church (2529 E. Belmont Ave.)
President John D. Welty. - 11 a.m. Feb. 28 – Mt. Olive Baptist Church (101 W. Clinton Ave.)

President Welty also will travel to Temple Missionary Baptist Church in San Bernardino on Feb. 14 accompanied by Dr. Ben Quillian, the CSU’s executive vice chancellor/CFO and a former Fresno State vice president for administration. Welty has participated in the Super Sunday program, traveling to Southern California and the Bay Area to visit churches.
