The Jewish Studies Program at Fresno State will present four events this fall beginning with a talk by Dr. Anat Gilboa on “Representations of Jewish Women in Israeli Film: Gender, Religion and the State in Israel” at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Henry Madden Library (Room 2206).

Gilboa is a visiting professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles. She specializes in early modern art, Jewish and Israeli visual culture and film. She has taught in universities in Israel, Canada and the United States, and has authored two books.

Gilboa will also be the discussant following the CineCulture screening of Israeli film “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center ( in the Student Recreation Center).

CineCulture presentations are free and open to the public. Parking is free after 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Remaining Jewish studies events for this semester include:

  • Thursday, Nov. 12 (5 p.m.): Dr. Bradley Hart, assistant professor in mass communication and journalism, will talk about his new book “George Pitt-Rivers and the Nazis” in the Social Sciences building (Room 105). The book tells the story of British anthropologist George Pitt-Rivers and his interaction with groups falling into the anti-Semitic far right. A code for a one-day parking permit is available at 559.278.5414.
  • Friday, Dec. 4 (5:30 p.m.): CineCulture and the Jewish Studies Program present “A Nazi Legacy: What Our Fathers Did” in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center. Commentary will follow by Dr. Peter Kenez, professor emeritus in history at University of California, Santa Cruz. The documentary looks at the lives of the sons of Nazi governors, plus commentary from the descendant of a Holocaust survivor whose family was murdered by these men. Parking is free after 4 p.m. Friday.
